How to find your best customers and do something for them
to actually do something for them
A study found the top 10% of customers spend 3x more per transaction than the other 90%. The top 1% spend 5x more per order than everyone else.
You can probably name two or three of your best customers off the top of your head. But when did you last let any of them know that you noticed?
A newsletter goes to everyone. A discount code goes to those who share emails. Neither tells your best customer that you actually know them.
So you can now use Claude to get your best customers and plan something out.
I used this prompt on a store to do the same.
The exact prompt:
From my order history, find every customer with 2 or more orders, ranked by total spend. Flag anyone who hasn't ordered in the last 12 months. For the top 10 to 15% of that list, group them into 2 or 3 buckets based on what they've bought, then suggest one specific thing worth doing for each bucket, grounded in their real order history.
Run it directly from here → Open in Claude
What comes back:
Every repeat customer you have, ranked by what they've spent
Anyone who hasn't ordered in the last year, flagged separately - a $500 order two years ago isn't the same signal as one from last month
The top 10 to 15% of that list, split into 2 or 3 buckets based on what they buy
One specific idea per bucket, grounded in their real order history
Why a discount is the wrong opener
Broad promotions train customers to wait for a code rather than buying. Recognition works differently, and it doesn't need to be complicated to work.
Experts say: check whether retention is actually the issue before you build anything to fix it. That's exactly why the output above is a decision, not infrastructure - no app, no tier system, just a list of who to prioritize and what's worth doing for each group.
Act on one bucket at a time.
Plus, whichever suggestion is easiest to do today is the right one to start with.
One example of what it might look like: a 24 or 48 hour window, early access on a new launch or restock before it opens to everyone else.
A few ways to customize this:
Heading into a sale like BFCM, weight the ranking toward the last 90 days instead of all time, so the buckets reflect who's buying right now, not who bought once in 2024.
Subscription tenure matters as much as total spend for a subscription brand - factor in both when you ask for the buckets. If you're already running a points or loyalty app, have Claude check each customer's tier, so the suggestion doesn't contradict anything.
Once you've got the buckets, you can also ask Claude to turn any of them into a Klaviyo segment. This way, you can reuse and optimize your segments through Claude.
One Claude Skill for all Shopify operations
This runs on The Agentic Operator, a Claude skill covering catalog, PDP content, segmentation, retention, ads, analytics, merchandising, and more.
How to set up:
The setup is two connections, both from Claude's own directory (go to Settings → Connectors, then search and add), then the skill file itself.
Create a project in Claude for your Shopify operations
Add the Shopify connector and authenticate with your store
Klaviyo, same way
Download the skill file - Get it here
Add it under Customize → Skills → Upload a skill
Type /the-agentic-operator, then ask anything in plain text
Here’s a video I recorded while testing the connector in Claude:
